Topic: Re-order files within an ISO?

Is it possible to re-arrange somehow the order that files are placed within an ISO image (and hence on the final burnt CD/DVD).

Reason being is that I would like the smallest files first (inner most part) and the largest files last (outer most part).
Basically sorted on size.

Why do I wanna do that?
Large files will benefit from the higher read speed at the outer edge (with CAV).
Small files will get less seek overhead if they are close to the directory structure on the inner part (I think).

Possible?

It is possible. Are you sure this can increase CD performance?

No.

It's just an idea I would like to try out.

So how would it be done?

if you have ever seen Microsoft' CDImage program, it has the ability to write the I386 directory on reverse sort order, which if you are making Windows install CD's, it can help speed up the file copy process greatly.
definitely would be a welcome feature :)

midas : What's the option to do the I386 re-ordering?

xoben : How's it going?

Thanks for that.

What's the latest version of CDImage and where would I get it?

This is only usefull for a Windows OS CD and nothing else but i'll try it to see what happens.
