Disclaimer
The procedure here is provided without any warranty or support. It worked for me and so it might for you.  Some of the procedures described here can wipe all of your data. Thought I’d warn you.

Step #1: Prepping BartPE
First we’ll prep the USB drive we’ll be using for booting. This is by far the largest step in the process, though it shouldn’t be difficult for anyone to follow. It requires a functional Windows system.
 1.Download BartPE builder from < http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ >
 2. Install BartPE. We’ll be assuming that you install to C:\pebuilder.
 3. Start PE Builder from the Start Menu. Point “Source:” to the location of your Windows XP setup files containing SP3.

QUOTE
Note: “Source:” is drive letter of your physical CD/DVD-ROM drive which is holding XP SP3 setup CD, a virtual drive mounted with XP SP3 ISO works as well

 4. Make sure the “Output:” is set to “BartPE”.
 5. Set “Media output” as “Craete ISO image” and filename as “c:\pebuilder\pebuilder.iso”
 6. Hit “Build”.
 7. When it’s done building, image file “c:\pebuilder\pebuilder.iso” should be created properly

Step #2: Creating bootable USB
 1. Satrt UltraISO (V9.3 or newer version, < download here >)
 2. Choose ‘File’->’Open’from main menu and open file “c:\pebuilder\pebuilder.iso”
 3. Choose ‘Bootable’->’Write disk image’ from main menu
 4.Insert the USB drive you intend to boot from
 5. Choose proper “Write Method”,USB-HDD+ is recommanded
 6. Hit “Write” to get a bootable USB drive
 7. When it’s done, copy the Windows XP setup files to the USB drive. Please note that you’ll only need the i386 folder.

QUOTE
If no errors occured in the above process, you should now be all set to boot from USB!

Step #3: Configuring the BIOS
 You should now reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to boot from USB. Instructions for doing so wildly from system to system, but generally entail the following:
 1. Reboot the system.
 2. While booting (before Windows starts loading), get into the BIOS configuration screen by hitting something like F1, F2, Delete or Escape. Hotkey instructions are generally provided on the screen.
 3. Go to the section that contains your boot devices.
 4. With your USB drive plugged in, the USB drive should be listed. If it isn’t, your system might not support booting from USB. Assuming that it is supported (as is the case with virtually all modern hardware), promote your USB drive to the primary boot device.
 5. Exit from the BIOS configuration, saving all changes.
If you’re completely new to BIOS configuration, < BIOS for Beginners > over at Tom’s Hardware might be a good primer. Be aware though, that you can seriously screw up your system by providing incorrect settings!

Step #4: Booting into BartPE
 Assuming that you properly configured your BIOS and your USB device supports booting, BartPE should now load. Depending on the speed of your USB device, this may take a while.
 If it isn’t working, then double-check the following before making a scene:
  • Is your BIOS properly configured for booting from the USB disk? (Is the USB device listed and does it have top priority?)
 •  Have you correctly prepared the USB disk in step two? (Restart the procedure.)
 •  Does your USB stick properly support being booted from? (Try another one!)

Step #5: Prepping the Hard Disk
 You need to make sure that your hard drive is partitioned and formatted properly. Especially if you’ve had Linux or some other operating system on it, you’ll need to repartition and format it. BartPE contains < DiskPart > for disk partitioning and < A43 File Manager >to format your drive.

QUOTE
If you are sure that your hard drive is set up properly (i.e. it has only run Windows, it contains a valid FAT or NTFS partition) then you can safe yourself the hassle and skip this step.

 This procedure will destroy any data on the hard drive.
To repartition:
 1. From the Go menu, navigate to DiskPart.
 2. Enter the commands needed to repartition your drive. For example, try the following: select disk 0 (select the first disk), clean (purges the entire drive, essentially resetting it), create partition primary (creates a single partition from the entire disk), assign (assign the partition a drive letter), exit (quits DiskPart).
 This procedure will destroy any data on the hard drive.
 To format:
 1. From the Go menu, navigate to the A43 File Manager.
 2. Right-click on the target drive (e.g. C:) and click Format. Should be self-explanatory.

Step #6: Launching Windows XP Setup from USB
 With your drive all ready, you can now launch the Windows XP setup with a few custom parameters. Let’s assume that the files are available at X:\i386.
QUOTE
Plugging in a device now won’t work. Remember that all USB devices will need to be plugged in right from the start while using BartPE.

 1. Run the following command:
X:\i386\winnt32.exe /syspart:C: /tempdrive:C: /makelocalsource /noreboot
QUOTE
 Note: Replace “/tempdrive:C:” with the drive which has enough space to hold windows setup files, you may change the partition which you want to install Windows to at next step #7.

 2. Proceed with the installation. When asked to convert the installation volume to NTFS, answer No. The setup program incorrectly believes that your USB drive (which is formatted as FAT) needs conversion.
 3. The setup program will then silently close, which might make you think that something went wrong. Don’t worry though.

Step #7: Continue Windows XP Setup from Harddisk
 1. Reboot your system
 2. Unplug USB drive during post stage
 3. Change your BIOS setting back to boot from hard disk again as needed
 4. You can now continue to finish setting up Windows XP.

  Congratulations!

Thank you very much for a very detailed tutorial.. After 4hours of searching the net for this I've finally found it.. Thanks again bro.You rock

Fantastic article - thank you. I registered just to feedback.

There's one additional detail I needed - diskpart didn't work for me, I had to do one additional step, which I found < here >.

Essentially, before running diskpart, from a command prompt, do the following:

CODE
net start dmserver
net start dmadmin

Posted by ezuk on Jan. 02 2009,04:49
I've spent nearly an entire night searching the net for something like this. This how-to is THE BEST, and it 100% works.

Steenbra's comment was the only needed addition - once I did that, everything went super-smooth!

Thank you so much for saving my laptop! :)

Thanks for this excellent guide.
However, I am still struggling with this #$%@ Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro V2010 notebook!

I will be very grateful if someone here can help.
This is the story:

I am attempting to do a clean install of Windows XP on a Amilo Pro V2010 notebook.

I have got the original Windows XP SP2 CD supplied with the notebook by Fujitsu-Siemens.

When I attempt to boot and install from the CD, I get an error: "ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded
Error Code 7"
Microsoft's advise at < http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812580 > does not help and I cannot find where to disable ACPI in the BIOS (I have flashed the BIOS to latest available ver. 1.0E).

I tested the memory with Memtest86 and Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic and all seems fine.

If I run setup.exe from the CD the existing Windows XP installation it starts out fine, but after rebooting and starting the copy process from CD to harddrive, the installation complains about many missing files e.g. cdaudio.sys, cinemst2.sys, cpqdap01.sys etc. (too many to list here).
Out of desperation I pressed Escape many times to ignore each error, but as expected after reboot there was an error: "Unknown hard error \SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll"

Trying to eliminate the CD drive as a possible problem, I tried installing from USB as per the guide above.

Booting from USB works, and I could partition and format drive C: from BartPE.
The install runs, but after entering the license code etc it ends with a message "Cannot complete Windows XP Setup Wizard because you canceled the wizard or because an error occurred."
I did not cancel,  so something went wrong.

I have never struggled this much to do a clean XP install. Must be something with the hardware...

Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
i tried this with a Windows XP x64 Install CD (with integrated SP2).
When I boot from the USB stick, the setup program gives the following error:

What could I do?

[QUOTE]Hello, I believe that you must integrate intel matrix storage drivers into original xp installation using nlite.
I have done so and integrated also several other drivers for SCSI and RAID, and created a custom XP CD, and now whenever I install a new PC with XP, I NEVER encounter any problem of this kind. Of course it would be easiast to select IDE instead of AHCI in BIOS if this would be possible, and then you would be able to install XP with your original XP CD. Good luck

I want to setup windows xp pro on my computer which is screwed up. I need a clean install of windows xp pro. I need to install it from my 2GB USB drive. Can I use this program to make a USB drive with these files? If not, what program or method does?  PLEASE HELP!

Hi,
I tried to install windows xp prof on my netbook Acer Aspire D150.
It is a brand new netbook with windows home edition install on it

I managed to get until the windows installation after running the command

winnt32.exe /syspart:C: /tempdrive:C: /makelocalsource /noreboot

, insert the product key, refuse to convert to NTFS. But then, I got an error report:
"No valid system partitions were found. Setup is unable to continue"

- Unfortunately Diskpart doesn't work
- if i start the A43 Management utility program, I can see that under "My Computer" only following drives are available:
 - RAMDisk(B:)
 - BartPE(X:) --> the USB drive

so my questions are:
- what is this RamDisk(B:)
- why can't I see my C:\ drive?
- I didn't reformat my harddisk before because I check in Computer Management and it lists the following:
--> ACER (C:)   - Partition - Basic - NTFS  - No error(Systempartition)
--> PQSERVICE  - Partition - Basic - NTFS  - No error(EISA-Configuration)

So I assumed it has only a primary partition which is NTFS-formatted, am I right?

Would be very grateful for any help

Hi

If I slipstream Intel AHCI drivers before making the USB with PE Builder, will I have problems?

Im asking since Im having the same problem as he_man and I think its because we need to slipstream drivers before making the USB.

When I try to slipstream the Intel AHCI drivers, I start making the iso with Pert PE and when its done building it, it says "warnings 1", it says iaStor.sys could not be found.

Any help please?

Posted by scothans on Jan. 04 2010,10:57
The problem you appear to be facing is that BartPE is not recognising your hard drive (iaStor.sys is the mass storage driver).

You could manually add the correct driver to your pebuilder folder, and then recompile a new iso/usb.

For example: copy custom disk drivers to \pebuilder\drivers\SCSIAdapters\somedisk_driver_folder_name

I did have ONE instance of a NETWORK driver that would not compile into my BartPE disk. I have never seen a mass storage driver fail to compile in. To resolve my network driver, I just manually copied the following files over to the following folders inside of the pebuilder...

E1y5132.inf > I386\INF

e1y5132.din
e1000msg.dll
nicco2.dll
NicInstE.dll > I386\SYSTEM32

e1y5132.sys > I386\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS

However, I have found that I get just as good of results, for installs, using the WinPE 2.0 or WinPE 3.0 disks. I expecially like using WinPE 3.0 (created on a windows 7 machine) because it doesn't need any drivers manually compiled into it. It has worked on every platform I've tried it on.

I make my WinPE 3.0 iso/usb like this...

From a Windows 7 machine, download and install the Windows 7 Automated Installation Kit. Burn downloaded iso into a DVD. Install Win 7 AIK from DVD.

::
:: if exist, delete c:\pebuild folder
::
:: create c:\petemp folder
::
:: start > all programs > microsoft windows aik > deployment tools command prompt (run as administrator)
::
::

set temp=c:\petemp
set tmp=c:\petemp

copype x86 c:\pebuild
imagex /mountrw winpe.wim 1 mount

::
::
:: copy startup script, ghost32.exe, gdisk.exe, etc to c:\pebuild\mount\windows
::
:: edit c:\pebuild\mount\windows\system32\startnet.cmd
:: and add startup.bat under the wpeinit command
::
:: search entire pebuild folder for bootfix.bin and delete all instances (three)
:: this will stop the "press any key to boot from cd" message from showing up
::

imagex /unmount mount /commit

::
::
:: copy c:\pebuild\winpe.wim c:\pebuild\iso\sources\boot.wim
::
::

oscdimg -n -b"c:\program files\windows aik\tools\petools\x86\boot\etfsboot.com" c:\pebuild\iso c:\pebuild\somename.iso

::
::
:: somename.iso is now ready to be burned to a cd
::

::
::
:: if a jumpdrive is desired, do the following on a windows 7 system...
::
:: install jumpdrive
::
:: open command prompt
::
::

diskpart
select disk 1
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=NTFS
assign
exit

::
::
:: copy the contents of c:\pebuild\ISO\ to jumpdrive
::
:: jumpdrive is now bootable and contains the files needed to image a computer
::
::

Now you can use the Win7PE disk to get a network/usb/external hdd connection to the XP/i386 files you need to complete your install.

ie: net use "some location"
winnt32 /syspart:c: /tempdrive:c: /makelocalsource

If your XP/i386 files  are also missing your mass storage drivers, you should use a program like nLITE to slipstream them into package before trying an installation, or you will be seeing a STOP 0x7B code during install

Hi, thanks for the guide but I am having trouble. For some reason when my usb loads on my laptop when I am at Step #5, when I try and click diskpart the cmd window shows up very briefly then disappears. Then if I try and get to diskpart through opening the cmd window, the second I type anything, my laptop blue screens. Any ideas?

Note: I had previously used HDDerase to wipe the contents of the harddrive because there were some serious viruses on it that I didn't know how to get rid of.

Hello,

I follow all the steps and get stuck at the end on the command !!

When I open the command, I have:
X:\MININT\SYSTEM32>

from there, I tried to enter 2 options:
X:\i386\winnt32.exe /syspart:C: /tempdrive:C: /makelocalsource /noreboot

and just:
winnt32.exe /syspart:C: /tempdrive:C: /makelocalsource /noreboot

But it said in both option that is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

When I tried to enter only:
SYSPART:C: /TEMPDRIVE:C: /MAKELOCALSOURCE /NOREBOOT
It said:
The file name, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

What I'm doing wrong on the command ?????

Please help.

Thanks

Followed the first 3 steps, inserted the USB drive into my PC, rebooted and I get;

"Non-Systems disk or disk error, replace and strike any key when ready."

This is a Compaq 510D desktop pc with no CDROM or floppy.  Could it be the flash stick I am using?  Any recomendations on a specific brand to use?

Step #1: Prepping BartPE
First we’ll prep the USB drive we’ll be using for booting. This is by far the largest step in the process, though it shouldn’t be difficult for anyone to follow. It requires a functional Windows system.

As per < this post >, one must run PeBuilder on Windows XP 32 bits. I had erroneously used peBuilder on Windows Vista 64. This caused BartPE to crash with blue screen when entering something in the command prompt, when I was running the generated BartPE from the USB key.

I successfully installed XP from USB using FlashBoot
< http://www.prime-expert.com/flashboot/ >

Posted by aguy on Dec. 12 2010,13:21
It worked fine until I reached the point where it started installing XP. Then, I got a series of error messages

"setup was unable to retrieve the product identification of the system you are installing"

and

regopenkeyex(system\setup\pid) returned error

Since I am booting from a USB key, and it has worked so far, the media is fine. Then I don't understand these error messages and how to get rid of them.

Can anyone else share their insight?

Thanks.

What is the correct method for creating a bootable USB stick from an ISO image from Microsoft MSDN.  I have a Win XP SP3 image from MSDN, and have attempted to create a bootable USB stick and have tried booting two different machines with it. On one machine, I get "Start booting from USB device...." and just stops there. On another machine, I get that same message, then "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration...", then "INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 18. Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit. "

It is my understanding that all I need is the MSDN OS ISO file,  Do I need to prep the USB stick with something else?

Thanks

Hi,

I have the winnt32 file on my slipstreamed Windows XP SP3 CD but when I build the BartPE folder it doesn't copy over.

Any ideas please?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot for the solution ... I spend almost 6 hours tryin to figure out a way to burn the iso image onto a usb.. nothin was workin out for me.. until i found this one .. it worked perfectly and now ve installed XP in my netbook.. a BSOD error popped in my way right after i plugged in the USB and was abt to start the installation  .. but solved it bt changing the SATA drive type to Native IDE .. :) ... i went thru a 100 other other forums, downloadin and installing countless number of tools, before tryin this one and t worked out perfectly .. thanks a lot ... :)
