hello balder

I know you have taught me how to boot pud linux iso file in cd/dvd before :

1. Use UltraISO to open pud.iso, copy folder "caspe" to C:\EasyBoot\disk1

2. Delete folder "caspe" in UltraISO and save it as "PUDLXE.iso" to C:

3. Use Easyboot-iso script for "PUDLXE.iso" and use the command given

4. Easyboot-iso will convert folder in C:\EasyBoot_DVD\disk1\caspe to "CASPE", so change it back to "caspe" (small letter)

5. Create "mycd.iso" in Easyboot. Then bootable in cd/dvd

My question now is I can't boot it from usb thumb drive. Would you mind to tell me the way please. Thanks a lot.

To solve the ”pudlxe.iso” issue – please read post nr; 15 HERE

Note: to make it work from CD/DVD you can use and launch the reduced pudlxe-iso-file (it gives you the original pudlxe-menu) – but this only works from CD/DVD – not from USB :O
To launch pudlxe from USB you must use “PUDLXE.IMG.GZ” (it gives you two options in menu: English and simplified Chinese).

You can also do it manually (skipping easyboot-grub-iso.script) – test this:

1. Follow tutorial as given in post nr; 15 HERE
2. Open folder disk1 and move folder ISO and folder casper to a temporary folder somewhere
3. Create ISO in Easyboot (check Joliet and check Allow lower case)
4. Use easyboot-usb.script and when asked, choose created EasyBoot-ISO-file
5. Copy folder ISO and folder casper from temporary folder to the root of USB
6. You may need to right-click to USB device in Windows and run “defrag” to USB device.

Note: you can probably not test USB or CD/DVD from “Virtual environment” (at least I wasn’t able to test it this way) You must test in “reality” burn to CD-RW / or use USB.

Thanks for download links :;):

hello balder,

I made it. Thanks a lot.

I made it at the first time successfully in my USB thumb drive. As what you said, it's only English and Simplify Chinese options. I choose English, it boot ok till to the desktop screen and works normally.

So my final work of course not to leave the USB thumb drive boot singlely. Then I copy the folder "casper" and the file "PUDLXE.iso" to my USB harddisk , which already contains a lot of bootable Easyboot programs in it.

When I boot this USB harddisk and choose PUD Linux, a strange thing happen ...

I've got English, Traditional Chinese and Simplify Chinese options. Then I choose Tradition Chinese. It boots normal and works fine.

I'm very happy with that. It means I can have this PUD Linux with Traditional Chinese both in cd/dvd and USB harddisk.

I really have to say thanks to you balder. You are really great. Again Thanks a lot. I've to close this topic. Thanks

Quote: ”When I boot this USB harddisk”

Aha… You used USB harddisk unit :;):
If using my script to make USB harddisk unit bootable it’s automatically formatted to NTFS and not FAT32 - if you don’t check “Force format to FAT” :O

It’s possible that when USB unit is using NTFS as file-system, you can use reduced ISO-file (PUDLXE.ISO without folder casper inside) – and in this way can take advantages of the “original menu” from linux inside ISO-file.
This is of course the best solution – but I have my doubt it works on a FAT32-file system ???

EDIT: I followed the above tutorial, and used an USB harddisk unit instead of the usual USB stick.
I still cannot use the original linux menu (launch reduced pudxle.iso-file).
However using special designed kicker-image “PUDLXE.IMG.GZ” it works okay on both USB stick as from USB harddisk unit.
This shows that file-system is not any parameter to take consideration to.
Further more – example also shows how sensitive this stuff is.

Hey… When you created this nice harddisk with all its utilities – why not use Ghost and create an image of it?
You can later transfer this image to any USB disk - including USB Stick/thumbdrive.
Note: this kind of Ghost images (images from USB harddisk units) can be used to USB stick as well, as long as my script easyboot-usb.script is used to make USB device bootable.
I know by experience that it works - I use this method to my own builds

hello balder,

As I said before I made the PUD Linux with a USB thumb drive, as you know when use the Easyboot-usb script, it will format the whole USB thumb drive. It means I can't put my USB harddisk to make the PUD Linux as all my Easyboot programs are all in there.

That's why everytime when I test a new iso file, I use the USB thumb drive. If ok, I just copy it to my USB harddisk with many Easyboot programs in it.

quote : "but I have my doubt it works on a FAT32-file system"

Due to some reason, my USB harddisk is Fat32 format. After I copy the PUD Linux from USB thumb drive to USB harddisk, I boot my USB harddisk right the way and test the PUD Linux, I found that the "original menu" from linux inside ISO-file pop out, then I can choose the "raditional Chinese"options. It means it still works in Fat32 USB harddisk format.

quote : "why not use Ghost and create an image of it?
"

I don't trust Ghost much, as sometimes after you write an image, you'll restore it with error and can't be continue. It not only mean you can't restore the backup image, and the worst is your original os and data all lost because you can't have them back from that image.

I trust Acronis as it never fails me. The way I copy to the other USB harddisk is either restore image by Acronis or ....

I just copy all data of the Easyboot program from my USB harddisk to the new USB harddisk. And use Grub_BootLoader to activate it. Then it works.
