hi all.
im a complete noob at this sort of thing. the more i read about .ISO and .BIN and .IMA etc.. the more im getting confused...
all im looking to do, is create a DVD, with an image of my hard drive, with the operating system (winXPsp2) and all of the software already installed on it, so incase of hardware failure etc..i can simply boot into DOS or winXP with this dvd or whatever, type "install" and hey presto, all my stuff is exactly back to the way it was. or was that, is? anyway...
such recovery discs come with such HP and COMPAQ machines, but seeing as though i am no longer using either and have a new self-assembled peice of rubbish that seems to be giving me a headache not worth the cheaper price i paid for it, i see myself constantly reformatting and having to reinstall every bit of software time and time again, painstakingly. and we all know how time consuming and frustrating it is...
could somebody please point out what particular software i should use to complete the tasks needed, and possibly a brief step-by-step tutorial on each task to get me to that pot of gold at the end of this colorfully confusing rainbow?
id be much appreciative if anybody could take the time to let me know how to do this thing.

Norton Ghost and Acronis TrueImage may help you. Here is instructions for using ghost:
1) Create a .GHO image of your C: drive by ghost (Please see user's manual of Ghost)
2) Making a bootable disc with Ghost image

Instructions for using Acronis TrueImage:
Step1: Backup system by TrueImage:
1) Create a .TIB image of drive C: by "Create image", use fixed 700MB size
2) "Create bootable rescue media" to a CD-R/RW disc
Step2: Create bootable DVD by UltraISO:
3) Choose 'File'->'Open CD/DVD' to open the disc
4) Add .TIB images to image area
5) "Save As' to an ISO and burn

i have one more question for you tho :P
will these methods restore everything from the backed up DVD even to a clean/formatted hard disk?
i have almost 4gb of data that needs to be "backed up". will the acronis method suffice with only a fixed 700mb size? im assuming this is simply an image that is used to "repair" the data thats still on the drive, yes? in which case this method wont help me...unless ofcourse im wrong ;)
and one last question. is this the most cost effective and efficient way to do the aforementioned procedure? seeing as tho it seems i will have to purchase this software i would like to know that this money is being well spent and the particular software WILL do exaclty what im after.
sorry if im being a pest and asking too much and too many questions but im a stickler like that :P

Yes.

TrueImage will create multi-700MB compressed images, this is not a problem for backup a 4GB disk partition.

Not sure. Ghost is my favorite, and TrueImage is great.
PS: You can find a better solution for you anyway.

well its been a few days and ive gotten nowhere lol
basically ive made an image of my C drive with ghost, in dos, and it automatically split the file as its over 2gigs, thus creating 2 files total.
in UltraISO, ive loaded the boot image, then added the .gho files to the ISO, saved it and burned it.
basically ive wasted around 5 blank dvd's and im getting nowhere.
ive used numerous boot image files, and im always encountering the same problem with all of them, being...
after the system boots into DOS, it only recognises the DVD as a bootable floppy, only recognising the files that were used for that particular boot image ie. the DVD is read as a floppy disk with X amount of bytes used and Y amount of bytes remaining, totalling the size of a floppy disk. (depending on which boot image is used, 1.44 or 2.88)
the additional .GHO files that i added to the iso before saving and burning to this bootable dvd are nowhere to be found.
the .GHO files are on the other hand shown in windows...
ive followed the steps in this topic...

.GHO is on the DVD disc (not the emulated floppy), you must start CD/DVD device driver in the floppy image (config.sys and autoexec.bat).
