As far as I know there are two types of ISO archives:

1.) Those which are compressed but have still the standard *.ISO format and
2.) alternatively compressed ISO files with the extension *.ISZ

Is this correct?
Is there really a difference or are *.ISO archive ALWAYS uncompressed ?

if not: Which compression rate ist better ?

Can I mount and burn *.ISZ file images as well
or only *.isz

Do you mean 'Optimized' ISO images by coding same files only once? 'Optimized ISO' should be a better name. UltraISO can mount and burn this kind of ISO's properly.

Recently I have ran into the isz format after un-raring a 39 part file. I am unfamiliar with this format and really need some basic information of how to proceede to end up with the program I thought I was downloading. I know how to burn iso using nero, but have sure been lost on this one. Any help for an Ole' Man?

Suggestions:
#1: Burn .ISZ image with UltraISO directly
 1) Start UltraISO
 2) 'File'->'Open' to open the .isz file
 3) Press F7 to burn it

 or

Right click on .ISZ file in Windows explorer, choose 'UltraISO'->'Burn to disc...'

#2: Convert .ISZ image to standard ISO and burn with other software
 1) Start UltraISO
 2) Choose 'Tools'->'Uncompress ISZ...' or
Choose 'Tools'->'Convert' to get an ISO image form .ISZ
 3) Burn it with Nero or other programs

#3: Emulate .ISZ as virtual CD/DVD-ROM and run programs there
 1) Start UltraISO
 2) Choose 'Tools'->'Mount to virtual drive', set file name and click 'Mount'
 3) Browse and run programs

 or

Use Daemon-Tools or Alcohol 120% to mount .ISZ images
