Forum: UltraISO Topic: ISO Optimize Bug started by: Enoch Posted by Enoch on Dec. 02 2005,09:28
There is a slight, but somewhat major, bug with the latest release (7.6.5.1225).When saving a DVD ISO and the "Optimize" option is selected (at least when formatting for a 4.7GB DVD) the final ISO image file size is incorrect. For example, I went to comile a 2.8GB DVD ISO image and the file size as reported both by Windows XP (SP2 and latest updates as of 12-2-05) and by Nero 6 is only 1.3 GB and the finalized DVD burn is missing files. Also, if the "Optimize" option is selected and the "Adjust Media Type of ISO if needed" option are both selected then the ISO file sizes are read as being only 650MB CD. I receive errors in ULTRAISO (when I reopen the image it says it is only 650MB), in NERO 6 (says I have to insert a CD to burn, not a DVD), and Alcohol 52% (reports the ISO as a 650MB CD only). Again, this error appears to be primarily around the selection of the "Optimize" option as it doesn't appear to be happening when I have it unchecked. Last thing to note is that I haven't tested this with the other image formats (.CCD, .NRG, .MDF/.MDS, .BIN, etc....) Posted by Enoch on Dec. 02 2005,09:40
I have since tested this again and found that it is also occurring when making .NRG Nero Images, and the .MDS/.MDF Alcohol Images. The assumption at this moment is that the sizing issue is occurring anytime the optimize option is selected. The incorrect sizing however is making it so that the images are not read correctly by other software, including burning software and virtual drive software. All these tests were done with the same DVD.

Suggestions: 1) Please use 'File'->'Simulated Save' to determine final size of the ISO image 2) Before you save the ISO, use 'File'->'Create Checksums' to get a .MD5 file. Then you can mount the ISO image to a virtual CD/DVD drive and use 'Tools'->'Verify CD/DVD Checksums' to check it. Posted by Enoch on Dec. 03 2005,14:44
I tried the suggestions and it didn't work. The final ISO size is still coming out to 1.3 GB (which is the same size given by the simulated save). Also, the checksum failed and the final ISO did not match the created checksum. Does the Optimize feature typically affect the ISO size. If so, it never did prior to the version:

Yes, this feature will affect the ISO size, and all versions of UltraISO do the same things unless there are no same files found in the ISO image.
Could you provide detailed information about that ? Posted by Enoch on Dec. 10 2005,02:22
I don't think it is so much the OPTIMIZE ISO option itself, but it appears to be that when this option is set and the "Adjust Media Type of ISO if needed" then Ultra ISO makes media sometimes incorrect. I'm not worried about it making a 2.7 GB ISO down to 1.3 GB. What bothers me is that it creates an ISO File that is set to a 650MB CD even though the contents are greater than that. (I cannot burn that ISO because it is internally larger than a CD but it reports itself as a CD to burning software. I don't know much about the ISO headers, but it might be something in that.
Sure... I did as you asked and selected the "create MD5 checksum"... then I used the ISO in Alcohol 52% and had UltraISO verify the MD5 and it came up incorrect. The ISO did not match the MD5 file. I never had any of these issues until the latest UltraISO, even though I have used the Optimize feature before... again, I don't think it is the Optimize feature itself, but it when in combination with the adjust ISO media type. (otherwise, why would a 1.x GB DVD ISO report to windows that the ISO File size is 650MB exact and Nero 6 say that it cannot burn it to a DVD because it is the wrong media... it asks me to incert a CD and then it can't burn it all because it runs out of room. |
