Forum: UltraISO Topic: Hybrid-CD Problem started by: shark Posted by shark on Jun. 10 2004,21:00
hiI have a problem with my Quarkxpress 6.0 cd. I will make a backup copy with integrated 6.1 updaters for the mac and the pc version. Wen i integrate the updater for the pc version and save the file it hase only the half size and not working on the mac anymore. Is it posible to edit the image under windows and integrate the mac updater in the mac part of the cd and the pc updater in the pc part of the cd? I have Ultraiso 7.2 shark Posted by Evil Titix on Jun. 10 2004,22:01
Unlikely so, I believe. The problem is that the CDs, just like any storage devices, have certain ways of storing and organising data - called file systems. There are several such file systems that may be used on CDs: ISO9660 (the standard), UDF (used by DVDs), Joliet (Microsoft extension), RockRidge (used by Linux), HFS (used by MACs). And I'm sure there are other, less common, CD file systems. Also note that these file systems do not exclude one each other; but having a file present in one of the file systems does not guarantee its availability in any other. MACs use HFS, as far as I know - while PCs use mostly a combination of ISO/Joliet. Unfortunately, HFS is not implemented in UltraISO; therefore, UltraISO cannot handle MAC CD images correctly. Meaning: first of all, if a file appears only in the HFS file system and not in the ISO one, UltraISO will skip it when saving; second, because UltraISO regenerates the file system, the saved CD will not have a HFS file system. This way, you can explain both why the file size is dropped to half and why the MAC doesn't recognize the new CD. Suggestion: (1) - perhaps useless - try contacting EZB Systems and asking for HFS support; hope is faint though, since they seem not to be involved in the MAC world at all; (2) - more useful - get MKISOFS (which is GPL - aka, free) and figure out how to work with MAC CD images. I never actually saw a MAC in my entire life, but I've seen certain options pertainig to HFS image creation while browsing the MKISOFS documentation; do note though that MKISOFS is a command line tool, and therefore it may (and will) be difficult to use - at least, in the beginning. Important: since the file structure of the MACs (forked files) has no correspondence on PCs (save for the NTFS file streams, which are seldomly used, and of which 99.9% of all existing applications know nothing), you may have to integrate the MAC update using a tool available on MACs. However, I'm quite sure that a MAC port of MKISOFS does exist. Posted by John Cavanaugh on Jun. 24 2004,01:54
I would definnitely like to encourage ezb-systems to implement HFS. My company would love to be able to make hybrid cd's on the windows platform and not have to deal with the mac system for mastering (Just let the mac developers deal with macs...)-- John C Posted by J on Jul. 14 2004,05:08
I'm sorry if this goes against the T&C's - UltraISO is a great product, and DOESN'T have a serious flaw that I've found in WinISO (So UltraISO is getting my registration fee today!)... However, as it doesn't support HFS for pre-mastering your images, I would recommend < CD Everywhere > It lets you create hybrid images on any JAVA enabled machine. Supported disc partitions include: ISO/Joliet/HFS/Rockridge. I've seen other software that lets you create partitions from Mac hard drives for example, but none that actually let you drag files across... therefore, if you had a 1mb file, but on 500mb partition, you had to have a 500mb HFS partition on your CD... With CD Everywhere, you can simply drag appropriate files across to each partition (or mark them as shared, so they appear in each partition), and it creates the partitions to the size required... regardless of the source partition size.
